Matt Wagner is an underrated talent. You might also want to check out his Batman/Grendel crossover.

Yeah, well I was planning on reading them all in order and I heard Devil by the Deeds is one of the original stories of Hunter Rose. Unless I'm mistaken, then could you please correct me?

If I'm understanding correctly, "Devil by the Deed" is a re-colored reprint of the first truly complete Grendel story that was originally printed as a backup to Wagner's "Mage" series (also worth checking out). So that is the best choice to start with (that's how I was introduced). Wikipedia features a good breakdown of the Grendel publication history, including some works I wasn't familiar with myself. Have fun.
